The Omega Speedmaster

The Omega Speedmaster refers to the collection of chronograph racing watches made by Omega. It was first introduced in 1957 and initially developed a following with automobile enthusiasts.

However, Omega Speedmaster’s status as the first watch on the moon sealed its reputation and propelled its popularity to the stratosphere.

When Neil Armstrong first took a walk around the moon in 1969, an Omega Speedmaster was strapped on his wrist. Omega was the official watch worn by the astronauts for the mission.

The Speedmaster can be roughly separated into several major watch models:

Watches That Look Like Omega Speedmaster

Omega Speedmaster Heritage: The Heritage models contain watches that hark back to the Speedmaster’s original design as a racing chronograph.

Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch: The Moonwatch is also known as the Speedmaster Professional. This is probably the most iconic of Speedmasters and the most coveted. Watches from this line are the ones related to the moon landings.

Omega Speedmaster Two Counters: The Speedmaster Two Counters contains only two subdials instead of three in common Speedmasters. The designs from this line are inspired by Omega’s early chronographs in the 1940s, so it carries a more classic design.

Omega Speedmaster Instruments: The Speedmaster Instruments are Omega’s further development for a watch used in space. Instead of a classic dial, you get an LCD dial with an electroluminescent backlight.

Omega Speedmaster 38 (Reduced): The Speedmaster 38 is also known as the ‘Reduced.’ It has a smaller case size than the standard Speedmaster. Common Speedmasters are usually over 40mm, but the Reduced models are only 38mm. This makes the Speedmaster 38 suitable for those with smaller wrists.

Omega Speedmaster Dark Side of The Moon: The Speedmaster Dark Side of The Moon celebrates Apollo 8’s exploration of the moon’s dark side. Watches from this line are usually skeletonized, with a rough dial surface, similar to the moon.

Alternatives to Omega Speedmaster

Watches That Look Like Omega Speedmaster

Many watches look like the Omega Seamasters. Some watches carry designs that remind people of the watch, while some are straight-up homages.

The watches in this list are chronographs with multiple subdials. The dial color is black, with stainless steel, non-rotating bezels. Most of the watches also carry a tachymeter on the bezel.

These are characteristics that made up the look of the Omega Speedmaster. So we decided that these features should be in any of the watches we recommend here.

Victorinox Alliance Sport Chronograph

Victorinox makes not just knives but also great watches too. Victorinox built this watch with an outdoor, sporty vibe.

This is different from the Speedmaster, built for racing.

The watch carries a 44mm gunmetal black casing, similar to the Speedmaster Dark Side Of The Moon line. The movement is quartz, with anti-reflective sapphire crystal and three subdials similar to the original Speedmaster.

The watch also comes with 100M (330ft) water resistance, perfect for surface water activities and casual diving.

Swatch Mission To The Moon

Watches That Look Like Omega Speedmaster

We can’t talk about homages to the Speedmaster without having this controversial timepiece in the picture.

The Mission To The Moon is Swatch’s collaboration with Omega. It is made to have the exact specification of the Omega Speedmaster.

The difference lies in the details. Instead of polished stainless steel, you get a bioceramic casing with a matte look instead. The watch strap is velcro instead of the stainless steel bracelet in the Speedmaster.

The watch is powered with a quartz movement, with a 30M(99ft) water resistance. The dial is also signed differently, with the Swatch and Omega logo present.

Swatch Irony Deepgrey YVS465G

Let’s start with Swatch, one of Omega’s sister brands, since they belong to the same watch family. The Swatch Irony Deepgrey YV465G is powered by Swatch’s own quartz movement, with 30M(99ft) water resistance.

This 43mm watch also has a black bezel with PVD coating and a sun-brushed black dial. This model, unlike the Speedmaster, has Arabic numeral markers.

The dial features Swatch Appliques and a date window at 6 o’clock. It has a stainless steel strap and clasp. The subdials show minute, hour, and day.

Seiko SSB031

The Seiko quartz SSB031 chronograph is one of the few Seikos we recommend on this list. It has a band and case made of stainless steel, and it can withstand water pressure of up to 100m (330ft.)

The watch has a 40mm diameter, with an analog model and tachymeter scale. The hour markers are indexed, and the caseback is a screw-down, solid metal type. The watch comes with Seiko’s proprietary Hardlex mineral crystal.

Like the Speedmaster, it also carries three subdials, one for minute, one for hour, and the third to function as second hand for the watch itself.

Stuhrling Rialto 3975L

This is a large watch, at 44mm. The Stuhrling Rialto 3975L is a quartz chronograph with a Japanese movement.

The watch comes with a case made of stainless steel with an alligator embossed leather band. The leather band makes this watch excellent for both casual and dressier occasions.

Three subdials are featured for minutes, seconds, and 24 hours in the dial. Unlike the original Omega Speedmaster, the Tachymeter is located on the dial rather than the bezel.

A large date window is located between 4 and 5 o’clock on the face of the watch. Other characteristics include a push/pull fluted crown with function pushers.

Alpha Chronograph Moon Watch

How can you talk homages without talking about Alpha? Alpha is one of our favorite homage makers, especially for their line of Speedmaster homages.

The Alpha Moonwatch is one of our favorites. It looks and functions like a Speedmaster, with three subdials and two pushers. The dial is black, with three subdials. It has a water resistance of 50M (165ft.)

This watch is equipped with chronograph capabilities and a tachymeter scale located on the bezel. It is powered by a mechanical movement manufactured by Seagull. It has a power reserve that can last for up to 42 hours.

Both the band and the case are made of stainless steel, and the glass is resistant to scratches thanks to the use of a hardened mineral dome glass.

Certina DS 2 Chronograph

Certina is also another sister brand of Omega. Both brands are part of the Swatch group.

Certina perhaps added more sports and racing design elements into this model. The watch is 41mm in diameter. It features a stainless steel casing with a combination of silver, white and green accents all around. The watch also features three subdials, similar to the Speedmaster.

The watch is encased in an anti-reflective sapphire crystal and stainless steel bezel. The watch has 100M (330ft) water resistance and has the Super Luminova added for best performance in the dark.

Bulova Lunar Pilot 96B258

Ask any watch enthusiasts for a respectable homage to the Omega Speedmaster. They will tell you about the Bulova Lunar Pilot.

The fun part about this model is that the Lunar Pilot also made it to the moon as the spare watch of Commander David Scott.

When his Omega Speedmaster broke down, he wore his spare Lunar Pilot instead and took a walk on the moon. Hence, you have the first private watch on the moon.

This watch is a bit large, at 45mm. It features Bulova’s high-frequency quartz movement with a sweeping second hand. The watch also comes with a chronograph function, a Tachymeter, and a water resistance of 50M (165ft.)

Dan Henry 1962

Dan Henry makes homage watches that pay tribute to a particular style and era of watchmaking rather than specific models.

The 1962 pays homage to racing chronographs from the 50s and 60s, of which the Omega Speedmaster is part. The 1962 is also frequently seen as a possible homage to the Rolex Daytona as well.

The watch has a diameter of 39mm, with a stainless steel case. It is powered by Seiko’s VK63 quartz movement, with three functional subdials, similar to the Speedmaster. Its matte black dial is protected with a K1 mineral crystal.

Bell & Ross V2-94 Black Steel

This may be a pricier option than the other models recommended here. However, if you like something more luxurious, yet not to the level of a Speedmaster, you will be just fine with a Bell & Ross.

The V2-94 Black Steel is an automatic mechanical watch with a 41mm diameter. This particular model is constructed of satin-polished steel and has a black aluminum ring around it. The watch’s dial is matte black, and both the hands and the markings have a coating of Super Luminova.

The watch comes with a sapphire crystal with an anti-reflective coating on the underside. The exhibition caseback is also in sapphire crystal. The watch comes with a 100M (330ft) water resistance with a screw-down crown.

Fossil Decker Chronograph

The Fossil Decker has the look of the Omega Speedmaster, with a more ‘space’ feel to it. The watch looks less like a racing chronograph but more like a ‘space’ watch.

The watch is matte black, with three subdials, arranged at 12, 6, and 9 o’clock. The watch is large at 44mm, with a stainless steel case and bracelet. Powering the watch is a quartz movement.

The watch face also features a date window at the 4-5 o’clock position. A tachymeter is printed on the bezel, similar to the Speedmaster. The watch is 100M (330ft) water-resistant.

Tissot PRC200

The Tissot PRC200 has the DNA of a Speedmaster, but it definitely tries to strike its own look.

The watch is powered by an ETA quartz movement, with stainless steel case and caseback. The watch has a 43mm diameter and is given a stainless steel bracelet.

The watch dial is matte black, with three subdials and a bright yellow seconds marker for that spirited, racing feel. A date window is present at the 4-5 o’clock position, something the original Speedmaster does not have.

The watch is also given sapphire crystal and water resistance of 200M (660ft).

Seiko SSB361P1

This Seiko retained the DNA that makes racing chronographs – subdials, Tachymeter on the bezel, and the chronograph function. As a result, this watch has the feel of an Omega Speedmaster, yes distinct enough to stand on its own.

The watch is also another behemoth at 44mm diameter, with stainless steel case and bezel. Tachymeter is printed on the bezel with three subdials similar to the original Speedmaster.

Powered by Seiko’s own quartz movement, it is protected with Seiko’s own proprietary Hardlex crystal. Finally, the watch is given a 100M (330ft) water resistance.

Stührling Concorso Dragster

Stührling is a maker of great homage watches. Of course, they have their own take on the Omega Speedmaster – the Concorso Dragster.

The watch features a black matte dial with three subdials similar to the original Speedmaster. The watch features a tachymeter at the bezel, with a stainless steel bracelet and case.

However, it sports an Arabic numeral, different from the Speedmaster. The hands are also different, with openings closer to the dial’s center.

The Concorso Dragster is powered by a quartz movement and has 100M (330ft) water resistance.

Revue Thommen Aviator

This Speedmaster homage from Revue Thommer is priced above $1,000, so it might not be everyone’s budget.

However, the watch is very well executed, with the quality and finish you could expect from a higher-priced Steinhart homage.

The watch comes with all the usuals you would expect from a watch of a similar price – stainless steel case, sapphire crystal, and automatic movement. The watch bezel has a tachymeter, similar to the original Speedmaster.

The watch also comes with a date window at the 4-5 O’clock position, something that the Speedmaster does not have. Instead of a steel bracelet, you get a padded leather strap, which feels like looking at a spacesuit.

Pagani Design 1701

Pagani Design is one of the best Chinese homage watchmakers, making great homages to famous and iconic Swiss watches such as those from Rolex, Omega, and IWC.

The Pagani Design 1701 is their take on the Moonwatch. The watch has a black matte dial with three subdials arranged at 12, 6, and 9 o’clock positions. The watch is large at 40mm, with a stainless steel case and bracelet.

Powering the watch is a quartz movement from Seiko, the VK63. The watch is also given a synthetic sapphire crystal and 100M(330ft) water resistance.

SEIKO Solar SSC493P1

This Seiko SSC493P1 has the DNA of a racing chronograph. It also has an ‘inspired’ look from the Speedmaster. But it is distinct enough to be its own design.

The watch is powered by Seiko’s solar movement, meaning it will never need battery change over its lifetime. The watch comes with a stainless steel case and caseback. The watch has a 45mm diameter and is given a stainless steel bracelet.

The watch dial is matte black, with three subdials and a bright red seconds marker. A date window is present at the 4-5 o’clock position, something the original Speedmaster does not have.
